Statistics on Family, 2022


The average household size was 3.17
According to the results of Address Based Population Registration System (ABPRS), the average household size showed a tendency to decrease in Türkiye, with a decline from 4 persons in 2008 to 3.17 persons in 2022.

Şırnak had the highest average household size
In Türkiye, the province with the highest average household size was Şırnak with 4.91 persons in 2022. Şırnak was followed by Şanlıurfa with 4.81 and Batman with 4.67 persons. The province with the lowest average household size was Tunceli and Çanakkale with 2.54 persons. This provinces was followed by Giresun with 2.57 and Balıkesir with 2.61 persons.

The proportion of one-person households increased
According to the results of ABPRS, it was seen that the proportion of one-person households, which consist of a person who lives alone, increased to 19.4% in 2022 from 13.9% in 2014.

The proportion of extended-family households decreased
It was seen a decrease in the proportion of one-family households which are defined as households comprising a couple without children or a couple with at least one child or a lone parent with at least one child. The proportion of one-family households decreased to 64.5% in 2022 from 67.4% in 2014. On the other hand, the proportion of extended-family households, which are defined as households covering at least one nuclear family household together with non-family member(s), decreased to 12.8% in 2022 from 16.7% in 2014.
The proportion of multi-person no-family households increased
It was seen an increase in the proportion multi-person no-family households of which members are not related to each other as couples or parent or child. The proportion of these households increased from 2.1% in 2014 to 3.3% in 2022.
The province with the highest proportion of one-person households was Gümüşhane
The province which had the highest proportion of one-person households was Gümüşhane with 30.4% in 2022. This province was followed by Tunceli with 29.9% and Giresun with 29%. The provinces which had the lowest proportion of one-person households were Batman with 11.1%. These provinces were followed by Diyarbakır with 11.3% and Şanlıurfa with 11.6%.

Adıyaman had the highest proportion of one-family households
The province which had the highest proportion of one-family households was Adıyaman with 73% in 2022. Adıyaman was followed by Gaziantep with 72.8% and Diyarbakır with 72.5%. The province which had the lowest proportion of one-family households was Tunceli with 52.9%. This province was followed by Yalova with 55.2% and Gümüşhane with 55.4%.

Lone parents with at least one child constituted 10.3% of households
The proportion of lone parents with at least one resident child in total households was 10.3% in Türkiye in 2022. It was seen that 2.3% of total households were lone fathers with at least one resident child and 8% were lone mothers with at least one resident child.
Bingöl had the highest proportion of households with lone parents
The province with the highest proportion of lone parents with at least one resident child was Bingöl with 12.6% in 2022. This province was followed by Adana and Elazığ with 12.4%. The provinces with the lowest proportion were Ardahan with 7.6%, Tokat with 7.9% and Yozgat with 8%.
The provinces with the highest proportion of lone mothers with at least one resident child were Bingöl with 9.9%, Adana with 9.7%, Elazığ with 9.6%. The provinces with the lowest proportion were Ardahan with 5.2%, Yozgat and Kars with 5.9%.
On the other hand, the provinces with the highest proportion of lone fathers with at least one resident child were Kilis with 3.6%, Iğdır and Malatya with 3.1%. The provinces with the lowest proportion were Nevşehir with 1.8%, Tokat and Sinop with 1.9%.
Hakkari had the highest proportion of extended-family households
The province which had the highest proportion of extended-family households was Hakkari with 20.5% in 2022. This province was followed by Batman with 18.7%, Bartın and Şırnak with 17.3%. The province which had the lowest proportion of extended-family households was Eskişehir with 8.6%. This province was followed by Çanakkale with 9.2% and Niğde with 9.3%.

The proportion of the individuals married to their relatives in their last marriage within total legal marriages was 8.3%
According to the results of ABPRS, within total legal marriages, the proportion of the individuals aged 16 and above who were married to their first cousins in their last marriage was 8.3%. When the marriages between the first cousins were analysed by kind of kindredship, it was seen that 46.5% of them were married to paternal aunt/maternal uncle children, 27.2% were married to paternal uncle children and 26.3% were married to maternal aunt children.
Mardin was the province with the highest number of individuals married to their relatives
When the marriages between the first cousins within total legal marriages were analysed by provinces, the province with the highest proportion of the individuals aged 16 and above who were married to their first cousins in their last marriage was Mardin with 20.3%. This province was followed by Şanlıurfa with 18.6%, Siirt and Diyarbakır with 16.9%. The province with the lowest proportion of individuals who were married to their first cousins was Edirne with 1.1%. This province was followed by Kırklareli with 1.5% and Çanakkale with 2%.

According to the results of marriage statistics, the proportion of marriages between the first cousins in total legal marriages was 5.9% in 2010, this proportion showed a steady decline in the following years and became 4.4% in 2017 and 3.9% in 2022.

Marriages between the first cousins were occurred mostly in Şanlıurfa with 18.4%
When the marriages between the first cousins were analysed by provinces, the province with the highest proportion of marriages between the first cousins in total marriages was Şanlıurfa with 18.4% in 2022. This province was followed by Mardin with 13.7% and Muş with 12.9%. While the province with the lowest proportion was Burdur, Edirne and Bolu with 0.7%, it was followed by Balıkesir, Düzce and Karabük with 0.8%.
Families were the source of happiness of individuals
When the persons as source of happiness were analyzed in 2022; while the proportion of individuals who mentioned that their families made them happiest was 67.6%, it was followed by children with 16.3%, themselves with 4.8%, spouse with 3.9%, parents with 3.8% and grandchildren with 1.9%, respectively.
The number of children whose father died was 266 thousand 532
According to the results of ABPRS, within the total 22 million 578 thousand 378 children in 2022, it was seen that the number of children whose both mother and father died was 4 thousand 219, the number of children whose father died was 266 thousand 532 and the number of children whose mother died was 81 thousand 420.
When it was analysed by sex, the number of children whose both mother and father died was 2 thousand 200 for males and 2 thousand 19 for females. The number of children whose father died was 136 thousand 436 for males and 130 thousand 96 for females. The number of children whose mother died was 41 thousand 404 for males and 40 thousand 16 for females.
Last year 180 thousand 592 children were affected by divorce events
As a result of the divorce cases finalized in 2022, while 180 thousand 954 couples were divorced, 180 thousand 592 children were given to guardianship. It was seen that guardianship of children was mostly given to the mother. 75.7% of the guardianship of the children was given to the mother and 24.3% to the father in 2022.
46.6% of the households had portable computer
According to the results of the survey on information and communication technology usage in households and by individuals, 94.1% of the households had the opportunity to access to the Internet from home in 2022. This proportion was 7% in 2004. While the proportion of availability of portable computer such as laptop, tablet and netbook in households was 0.9% in 2004, this proportion increased to 46.6% in 2022. While the proportion of availability of mobile phone/smart phone in households was 53.7% in 2004, it increased to 99.2% in 2022.

28.9% of the extended families were below the poverty threshold
According to the results of income and living conditions survey, the at-risk-of-poverty-rate based on the poverty threshold set at 60% of median equivalised household disposable income was 21.6% in 2022.
When the poverty rate was analysed by household types, it was observed that 10.9% of one-person households, 21% of one-family households, 28.9% of extended-family households and 15.5% of multi-person no-family households lived below the relative poverty threshold.
The share of people living in their own dwellings was 56.7%
According to the results of income and living conditions survey, when the ownership status of dwellings was examined in 2022, it was seen that 56.7% of the individuals were the owners of the dwelling they were residing and 27.2% of the individuals were tenants. While the share of those living in lodging was 1.1%, the share of those who did not pay rent despite not living in their own dwellings was 15.1%.
Inability of heating due to isolation was the most common housing and environmental problem
According to the results of income and living conditions survey, in 2022, it was seen that 33.61% of the individuals faced with heating problem due to isolation, 33.57% of the individuals faced with problems in their dwellings such as leaking roof, damp walls/floors/foundation, rot in window frames/floors and 21.72% of them faced with pollution, grime due to traffic/industry or other environmental problems.

Turkish Statistical Institute has been publishing publications or press releases since 2012 on special days and occasions considering the importance of such days. In this context, this press release was prepared specifically for the Family Week on 15-21 May.
In the press release, basic statistics demonstrating the family structure of the country are presented. With the proclamation of the General Assembly of the United Nations, the day of 15th May is celebrated as the "International Day of Families" since 1994. Each year, a specific theme is highlighted for this special day to protect and strengthen the family structure. This year's theme of the International Day of Families is "Families And Demographic Change".
