Lassen Volcanic National Park is expecting local contractor Hooker Creek Construction to begin working on the Sulphur Works area of Lassen Highway 89 road shoulder that has partially undermined the road. To accomplish this work, the contractor will need to close the road 8:00am to noon and 1:00pm to 5:00pm on weekdays. Public vehicles will be able to pass through the area before and after work hours, during a noon break, and on weekends. The construction takes place during the least busy time of the year with enough time to complete work before winter snows.

Sulphur Works is about one mile north of the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center. Visitors entering the park at this location during work hours and the temporary closure of Highway 89 can drive to the northern areas of the park using Lanes Valley Road.

Visitors can enter Lassen Volcanic National Park from the northern portion of Highway 89 at Manzanita Lake. As visitors head south, the safest turnaround area to avoid the temporary closure at Sulphur Works is the Bumpass Hell parking lot. It takes roughly 45 minutes to drive from Manzanita Lake to the Bumpass Hell trailhead parking lot.

During the past winter, the park experienced a higher-than-average snowpack. A short portion of Highway 89 was damaged at Sulphur Works, approximately one mile north of the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center. Thirty feet of sidewalk in that location collapsed and some of the road became undermined.
