WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Ill. - Following the tragedies that took place in Rockford last month when four innocent citizens lost their lives during a senseless brutal attack, several heroes are recognized at the Winnebago County Board meeting for their lifesaving efforts.

As we continue to mourn the loss of Romona Shupbach, Jacob Shupbach, Jay Larson and Jenna Newcomb, who tragically passed away on March 27, 2024, it is important to recognize two individuals whose heroic actions prevented further tragedy: Keith Fahrney, who courageously and selflessly intervened during the attack to directly save the life of Lindsey Craig; and Winnebago County Sheriff's Deputy Michael Gambino, who immediately answered the call of duty to finally stop the heinous rampage and saved potentially many other lives.

To honor these individuals in front of family, friends, members of the public and the Winnebago County Board, Chairman Joe Chiarelli and Winnebago County Sheriff Gary Caruana each presented awards to Fahrney and Deputy Gambino to recognize their bravery.

"We proudly commend our own Deputy Gambino for his swift thinking, professional action, bravery, and courage on March 27, 2024 that led to the arrest of an active killer," said Sheriff Caruana. "Thank you for going above and beyond, serving and protecting the citizens of Winnebago County."

Additionally, Chairman Chiarelli and Sheriff Caruana also recognized another civilian for her courageous actions and lifesaving measures that she took to save a young child's life in our community: Cassidy Davenport, who rendered aid in a sudden and unexpected situation, which resulted in saving a young child's life at the Machesney Park Target on March 26, 2024.

"With our greatest appreciation, we recognize both Keith Fahrney and Cassidy Davenport for their selfless actions as civilians and extraordinary efforts as heroes," said Chairman Chiarelli. "If it were not for them stepping in to assist those in need, two other lives might have been lost. Mr. Fahrney and Ms. Davenport represent the very best values of our community and they both deserve to be commended for their bravery."
