Washington, D.C. - Today, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX) and Ranking Member Gregory W. Meeks (D-NY) issued the following statement on the one-year mark since the beginning of the civil war in Sudan.

"Today marks the one-year anniversary of the civil war in Sudan, a conflict that continues to escalate and has caused one of the largest humanitarian crises in the world and seen verified atrocities committed on a daily basis.

"The United States must build on the appointment of Special Envoy for Sudan Tom Perriello and continue to show its commitment to the people of Sudan. Pursuing a fresh approach to facilitate an end to this conflict is critical. The United States must continue to work alongside our allies and partners to incentivize the RSF and SAF, as well as the international actors who enable them, to end the fighting and place Sudan back on the path for a civilian-led transition. It is integral that all parties unequivocally call for an immediate cessation of hostilities, allow humanitarian access, and work to return power in Sudan back to its people. We also call on international actors, especially the United Arab Emirates, to join Sudanese civilians in a demand for peace. On the one-year anniversary, we reaffirm support for the people of Sudan and their journey towards peace and democracy."
