Massively deployed PON technologies have followed a predictable evolution: ever-increasing speeds from BPON to EPON to GPON and now 10G PONs. The next steps in this path will be 25Gbit/s and 50Gbit/s PONs. Up until now, PONs have been deployed almost exclusively for FTTH. However, the anticipation of 5G densification focuses attention on the mobile transport use case. 5G has been a catalyst for a range of optical solutions that, like PON, must meet last-mile requirements. These include both dedicated fiber and WDM solutions, both PTP and PTMP. And like PON these systems must be optimized for low-cost, extreme environments and may need to co-exist with existing networks and services.
Steve Penticost will present on 'Solving the 5G fronthaul challenge by Ethernet and passive WDM' before joining the panel to explore the full range of fiber access technologies with a particular focus on providing transport for 5G traffic. Book your place at the OFC Conference online from June 6.
