t was a time of networking and fostering community while parents participated in an activity that benefited both their kids and their wallets. Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's Early Childhood Center (ECC) co-hosted its first Children's Clothing Swap on Tuesday, April 9 at its facility on campus.

"The event's aim was to allow parents to refresh their children's wardrobes affordably, promote community among student parents and ease the financial burden of clothing expenses," said Lealia Williams, Student Care and Advocacy coordinator in the SIUE Office of Student Affairs. "It turned out well, and I enjoyed seeing the success of it, as part of my job is to advocate for students and student parents."

Clothes, book bags, school supplies and more were donated for parents to pick and choose.

"Items were generously contributed by staff, faculty, community members and campus students, reflecting a shared commitment to supporting and uplifting the University community," explained Williams. "During the event, Linda Mitchell, of the Metro East Literacy Project, discussed the importance of reading to children, and each family received a bag of books."

Co-hosting the event was Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS), a grant that provides scholarships to cover the cost of childcare on and off campus. The grant supports various initiatives for student parents, including Parent Workshops and a Student Parent Support group, according to Williams.
