How to request a traffic calming device for your neighborhood

How to request a traffic calming device for your neighborhood

Published on April 17, 2024

Since reinstating the City's Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program two years ago, the program has proven popular, according to a recent City Council update.

Transportation& Public Works shuttered the program in 2014 because speed bumps hindered emergency response times.

In the meantime, complaints about speeding in neighborhoods kept coming.

As a result: In March 2022, the use of speed cushions and speed tables were approved and the traffic calming program went back into gear for low-volume, residential streets only. Since then, 124 applications for speed cushions have been received, according to the council report.

By the numbers: In the last year, speed cushions have been installed or are planned at 20 locations.

  • What if I'm concerned about speeding in my neighborhood: You can submit a traffic calming request through the MyFortWorth app or the call center at 817-392-1234.
  • Applications are also available on the Transportation& Public Works webpage.

What happenswhen an application is received:

  • TPW staff contacts applicants to discuss their request and confirm eligibility of a roadway for traffic calming.
  • Speed data collection is performed and installation of traffic calming countermeasures is recommended when 85% of the motorists exceed the posted or prima facie speed limit by five miles per hour or more.
  • TPW provides the applicant with a consent form, photos of speed cushions or tables, and a map showing proposed placement.
  • The applicant is responsible for securing two-thirds property owner support within the impacted block and 100% support of owners impacted by proposed placement.

What's next: Installation takes three to four months from the date of TPW's receipt of a completed consent form.

How will we know it's working: Before and after evaluations are done to ensure the installations are reducing speed and meeting residents' expectations.
