Joint Committee on Public Petitions and the Ombudsmen to discuss petition regarding ‘Kiltimagh Water Scheme’

The Joint Committee on Public Petitions and the Ombudsmen will meet tomorrow, Thursday, 25 April, to consider Public Petition No. P00021/22 'Kiltimagh Water Scheme' from Mr Thomas Carney.

The meeting at 1.30pm in Committee Room 4 of Leinster House will be split into two sessions to hear from:

1:30pm - Representatives from Kiltimagh Cleragh/Lisduff Group Water Scheme, Mr Thomas Carney, Petitioner and Campaigner, Mr Alan Ivers, Campaigner, and Ms Eileen O'Brien, Campaigner;

2:30pm - Officials from the Department of Housing, Heritage and Local Government, and representatives from Mayo County Council and Uisce Éireann.

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Martin Browne said: "The Committee welcomes the opportunity to consider this petition on behalf of the community of Cleragh in Kiltimagh, Co Mayo, and their 12-year campaign to secure a reliable water scheme. In our first session we will hear from the petitioner, Mr Carney, and his fellow campaigners Mr Ivers and Ms O'Brien about the needs of the community, proposals for development of a suitable water scheme and the delays and obstacles they have encountered. Members will then hear from representatives of the Department, Mayo County Council and Uisce Éireann regarding the history of the scheme, funding options and the current status of the project."

The Committee will also consider the following petitions:

  • Public Petition Number P00036/21 'Reform of Insurance for Thatched Heritage Buildings' (resumed);
  • Public Petition Number P00006/22 'Bye/By Elections in Ireland may comply with legislation however they do not comply with the Constitution' (resumed);
  • Public Petition Number P00049/23 'Extra Time to be introduced as a Reasonable Accommodation for Dyslexic Students in State Examinations (Junior Cycle & Leaving Certificate)' (resumed).


The Joint Committee on Public Petitions and the Ombudsmen is a standing Committee of the Houses of the Oireachtas and has 11 Members, seven from the Dáil and four from the Seanad.
