Towns of Alfred and Almond - Alfred Sand and Gravel Mine Expansion and Modifications

Negative Declaration

Allegany County - The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC), as lead agency, has determined that the proposed Alfred Sand and Gravel Mine Expansion and Modifications will not have a significant adverse environmental impact. The action involves a 45.3 acre expansion to the life of mine limits of New Enterprises Stone & Lime Co. Inc.'s (NESL) Alfred Sand and Gravel Mine which now includes NESL's adjacent Emerson Sand and Gravel Mine. There will be no mining into the groundwater table. A field conveyor may be used to transport excavated material to the current processing plant which includes material processing with crushers, screens and a wash plant. Other changes to the previously permitted portions of the mine include mining deeper to obtain sand and gravel reserves below the previously established mine floor, elimination of french drains and check dams from the side slopes and a change in the hours of operation for consistency between the hours previously used for the two mines. The project is located at 638 NYS Route 244 in the Towns of Alfred and Almond, New York.
