Missouri City Police Department Makes History

First Texas Law Enforcement Agency To Attain Autism Certification

Missouri City, Texas - April 29, 2024 - In a significant stride towards fostering inclusivity and support for individuals with autism and their families, the Missouri City Police Department proudly announces its attainment of the Certified Autism Center™ designation, highlighting its unwavering commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all residents.

Autism, a condition often burdened by societal stigma, poses challenges for individuals and families seeking acceptance and support. Recognizing these barriers, the Missouri City Police Department has undertaken rigorous training and certification through the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). This achievement reflects the department's dedication to understanding and accommodating the unique needs of those with autism.

The Certified Autism Center (CAC) designation signifies that the Missouri City Police Department has met rigorous standards set by leading experts in the field of autism.

Key features of the training included:

Comprehensive 2-hour online training program provided officers with a deep understanding of autism, communication strategies, and de-escalation techniques tailored to the unique needs of autistic individuals.

Understanding Autism: Officers gain insights into the characteristics and challenges faced by individuals on the autism spectrum, promoting empathy and sensitivity in their interactions.

Effective Communication: Through interactive modules, officers learn communication styles that resonate with autistic individuals, reducing the risk of misunderstandings and fostering positive engagements.

Safety and De-escalation: Specialized scenarios guide officers in navigating challenging situations involving autistic individuals, emphasizing de-escalation tactics and ensuring the safety of all parties involved.

The program's practical approach will now allow Missouri City police officers to actively engage in real-world scenarios, including identifying potential locations where missing autistic individuals may be drawn to and practicing appropriate communication techniques.

Missouri City Police Chief Brandon Harris expressed his pride in the department's accomplishment, stating, "We prioritize the needs of every individual we serve, striving to create a welcoming and accessible space for all. Achieving certification as a Certified Autism Center™ reaffirms our commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive environment for individuals with autism in Missouri City."

Together, the department and the community strive to make Missouri City a welcoming and inclusive place for everyone.
