Metro Bank to Introduce Next Generation Edible Pens to Meet Net Zero Carbon Deadline

31st March 2023
  • Kimchi & Curry Voted As Top Flavours
  • "Customers Deserve Treats Too"

Hot on the heels of its new sustainable pen being launched in March, Metro Bank is now looking at the next generation of sustainable items and plans to introduce a new edible pen in its 76 stores to meet its net zero carbon deadline. The new edible pen will represent the ultimate portable snack, providing both sustenance and sustainability - they are expected to complement the free treats the Bank has always provided to dogs visiting its stores.

Metro Bank currently gives out approximately three million pens a year in stores. The Bank recently changed its pen design - the first change in over a decade - introducing a more environmentally sustainable pen. But now the Bank wants to go even further and introduce a completely sustainable edible pen with zero waste.

In a blind trial survey, over 1,000 Metro Bank customers were asked to vote on their favourite flavours for a new portable snack - surprisingly kimchi and curry topped the popularity list:

  1. Kimchi
  2. Curry
  3. Cheese & Pickle
  4. Milk Chocolate
  5. Rhubarb & Custard

"We are always looking at ways we can be different and serve our customers better. We are very excited about the possibility of offering something so unique that will not impact the planet negatively at all," commented a Metro Bank spokesperson. "Given how popular our current pens are, we are a little worried that demand for the new pens may be stratospheric, but we have always given free treats to dogs in our stores and that has always been very manageable.''

Metro Bank is also rumoured to be planning to approach a maverick celebrity chef to create a bespoke Metro Bank flavour based on the look and smell of its stores.

The new edible pens are expected be available in stores by very early April 2024.
