Baseball earns Midwest Region's five-seed, will face Northwood in NCAA Tournament opener

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A side effect of capturing the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament title is that the Bellarmine University baseball team took all of the uncertainty and suspense out of the equation when it came to earning a DII NCAA Tournament berth.

The only questions remaining after the Knights defeated 19th-ranked Illinois Springfield 4-3 on Sunday afternoon in the GLVC title game to lock up an automatic bid in the NCAA Midwest Regional pertained to seed, opponent and site. Those inquiries were answered during Sunday evening's NCAA Selection Show.

Bellarmine garnered the five-seed and will meet four-seed Northwood in the opening round at host and top seed Ashland. Complete tournament details are anticipated to be released Monday.

Bellarmine (33-19) will be making its third straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament after receiving at-large bids the previous two seasons.

Eight teams earned spots in the Midwest Regional, and they will be divided evenly at two hosting sites. In addition to Ashland, Illinois Springfield will host after being awarded the two-seed. The winners will square off in an NCAA Super Regional.

At Bellarmine's site, host Ashland will face eight-seed Tiffin in addition to the Knights' contest against Northwood. At UIS' site, the Prairie Stars will clash with seven-seed Drury and three-seed Wayne State will battle six-seed Quincy.
