Whippoorwill Lane Extension Project Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2024

11 a.m.

A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held for the Whippoorwill Lane Extension Project at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 10. A tent for the event will be set up east of the entrance of Marbella Lakes subdivision (on Marbella Lakes Drive just east of Hermosa Way). Parking will be at the Naples Church of Christ, 12760 Livingston Road, Naples, FL 34105. Collier Area Transit will shuttle attendees to the tent site starting at 10:15 a.m. There is no parking available at the tent. (A location diagram is at the end of this news release.) All are welcome to attend.

Speakers include Board of County Commissioners Chairman, Chris Hall, District 2, Commissioner Dan Kowal, District 4; Transportation Management Services Department Head Trinity Scott; and Transportation Engineering Division Director Jay Ahmad. Deputy County Manager Ed Finn will serve as the Master of Ceremonies and Naples Church of Christ Pastor Lyle Asbill will provide the invocation. Mason Classical Academy's 4th Grade Paladins will sing the National Anthem and other patriotic selections.

The Whippoorwill Lane Extension Project was opened to traffic in mid-December as crews continued to work on completing some punch list items. The project now connects what were two previously dead-end roadways, Whippoorwill Lane and Marbella Lakes Drive, allowing greater connectivity and access along the project corridor for the traveling public. The residential community along Marbella Lakes Drive has direct access to Pine Ridge Road and I-75 via Whippoorwill Lane and the new alignment reduces travel to I-75 by more than three-quarters of a mile. In addition to improving access and providing additional route choices for residents and businesses along the Whippoorwill Lane & Marbella Lakes Drive project area, the interconnection also improves access and response time for first responders and provides route choice opportunities in the event of emergencies that may restrict the flow of traffic on the adjacent arterial roadway network.

Another benefit is that the project provides traffic calming along the corridor using roundabouts and lane width reductions. Traffic calming reduces vehicle speeds, increases road safety, reduces environmental impacts, and increases comfort and mobility for non-motorized vehicle users such as bicyclists and pedestrians. All of this leads to more livable communities with increased neighborhood interaction, enhanced aesthetic values, reduced crime, and increased property values. A new traffic signal installed at the intersection of Livingston Road and Marbella Lakes Drive was also added. Other improvements include sidewalks, curb and gutter and drainage upgrades.

The project was completed within the approximately $4.7 million budget.
