Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki, City Cultural Affairs Director Tina Betz, and Jerry duPhily of Out & About Magazine invite City residents and art lovers from around the region to the next Art Loop Wilmington of 2023 this Friday, December 1. The popular FREE art exhibition, now in its 35th year, is a partnership between the Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs and Out & About. Galleries in and around Wilmington will participate in this month's Art Loop. A complete list can be found in the December issue of Out and About.
Patrons are encouraged to take advantage of the Art Loop shuttle provided by the City of Wilmington Parks & Recreation Department. The shuttle will leave the parking lot of The Delaware Contemporary, located at 200 South Madison Street, at 5:45 p.m. In addition to the featured venues, shuttle riders vote for their choice of galleries to visit.

Wilmington's Redding Gallery, located at 800 North French Street, continues to present an exhibition by Theda Sandiford entitled I Am My Hair. "My hair is a collection of memories twisted together with thread bundled in intricate knot and layers of life's undulations," says Sandiford. "With this work I have created a bridge on which to meet you. Created during open studio yarn wrapping sessions, I invited the community to wrap and hitch knot thousands of yards of yarn, recycled sari thread, plastic cord, trim, ribbon, sequins, trim and pom-poms onto cotton ropes. More than 100 participants have already imbued their essence, becoming a part of each rope, as we discussed the trials and tribulations of our gray hair, teal hair, thinning hair, hats, wigs, weaves, braids and locs. Despite these differences, we found a common denominator amongst us all, HAIR."
Patrons are invited to attend an Art Loop reception on Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
The other featured establishments in December include The Delaware Division of the Arts' Mezzanine Gallery, the Urban Artist Exchange, and the Delaware Center for Horticulture.

From Lauren Peters's Art Monster exhibition

The Delaware Division of the Arts' Mezzanine Gallery, located on the second floor of the Carvel State Office Building at 820 North French Street, proudly presents Art Monster, an exhibition by Lauren E. Peters, on display through December 29. Peters is a Wilmington-based visual artist working with the concepts of identity and gender through self-portraiture. She was awarded the Delaware Individual Artist Fellowship "Emerging Artist" by the Delaware Division of the Arts for her portraits. In 2021, Peters curated a group exhibition, "Appearances," at The Delaware Contemporary with 16 other artists creating a piece based on an early self-portrait and saw the public installation of her portrait of "Wilma," namesake of a new restaurant/bowling alley in downtown Wilmington. She attended the Soaring Gardens Residency in 2022 and will attend a residency at the Vermont Studio Center in the spring of 2024. Lauren is currently the recipient of the 2023 Delaware Division of the Arts' "Established Fellow" award for painting.
The theme for this show was inspired by Peters' recent reading of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and builds on the term "art monster" penned by Jenny Offill. In this series of paintings, Peters explores identity, societal pressures, and transcending conformity as ways to free herself and become her own creature. Peters says, "Choose your own adventure. We are both Frankenstein and monster. Creator. Created."
The Mezzanine Gallery is open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Guests are invited to attend an Art Loop reception on Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

The public is again invited to tour Wilmington's newest green space - the Urban Artist Exchange Open Studios at 16th and North Walnut streets - which tomorrow hosts a special Holiday Market that will include local artisans with handmade items and much more. There will be a holiday movie playing and hot beverages, as well as fun and ornament crafts for the entire family! Join us from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. to help ring in the holiday season!

Peony by Carol Gangemi

The Delaware Center for Horticulture, at 1810 North Dupont Street, is proud to present Through Artistic Eyes by the Birmingham Studio Painters. A group of creative women watercolor artists, Birmingham Studio Painters originated at Longwood Gardens led by Carol Gangemi. After the pandemic and construction shut down classes there, they moved to Birmingham Friends Meeting House. Inspired by nature, these artists love painting all things that bring them joy, whether it be flora or fauna. After painting weekly for years together, encouraging and supporting one another's artwork and lives, the studio class has evolved into a close-knit sisterhood. Through the introduction of new techniques, practice, and informal critiques, each artist has developed a personal style. The love of painting and looking at the world through artistic eyes has created a kinship of like-minded women, a tribe of their own.

The public is invited to stop by for DCH's special extended-hours Art Loop from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and check-out the Holiday Bazaar and Greens Sale while you're there. The exhibit will be on display until December 20, 2023.
