SAMWU UPDATE ON THE UNION’S ACTION IN ETHEKWINI

Special Note:Happy 37th Anniversary to COSATU. Formed December 1985

1 March 2024

The South African Municipal Workers' Union (SAMWU) hereby provides an update on the recent actions taken by the union and its members at the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, starting from February 27, 2024. A significant development occurred on February 29, 2024, with the convening of the Joe Moloisane Regional Shopsteward Council (RSSC). During this gathering, discussions were held regarding the issues leading to the impasse between workers and the City of eThekwini, particularly focusing on demands for workers to be paid in line with the categorisation of the City.

Additionally, the RSSC received updates on fellow employees who were arrested during the course of the action. SAMWU has successfully secured their release through bail, ensuring their welfare, and standing by its members during challenging times. Furthermore, the RSSC was briefed on the court application initiated by the City seeking to interdict workers from participating in the mass action. While respecting the court's decision, the Union continues to explore alternative avenues to address grievances and compel the employer to fulfil its obligations to workers.

In alignment with this commitment, SAMWU announces its intention to engage in discussions with the City to address the raised demands. A meeting between the Union's leadership and the City is scheduled for March 7, 2024. SAMWU assures its members and the community of constant and timely updates regarding these engagements, reaffirming its dedication to transparency and accountability. Following the conclusion of the meeting, members will be briefed promptly on the outcomes, ensuring that they are kept informed and involved throughout the process.
