Monaco Takes Part in the 74th World Health Assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO)

The 74^th World Health Assembly (WHA) was held in a virtual format from 24 May to 31 May 2021.

Taking account of the current situation, the theme of the general debate was: 'Ending this pandemic and preventing the next one: building a healthier, safer and fairer world together.'

In addition to the usual discussions, much of the debate at the WHA focused on implementing a process for strengthening the WHO, including systems for preventing and responding to future global health emergencies and pandemics.

In this context, the Member States adopted a resolution on this subject by consensus. It establishes, inter alia, a Working Group of Member States, charged with analysing the recommendations made by several independent Review Committees with regard to strengthening the preparedness and response of the World Health Organization to health emergencies. The first conclusions of this Working Group, including the possible development of an international legal instrument relating to pandemics, will be discussed at a special session of the WHA, to be held in late 2021.

At the same time, the Prince's Government co-sponsored several resolutions on issues that are a priority for the Principality, including a resolution that aims to put an end to violence against children and one intended to strengthen measures to combat malaria.

The Monegasque delegation was led by H.E. Ms. Carole Lanteri, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of the Permanent Mission of Monaco to the UN in Geneva.

H.E. Ms. Carole Lanteri chaired the Credentials Committee at this Assembly.

As a reminder, the World Health Assembly is the supreme decision-making body of the WHO and is responsible for determining the policy of the Organisation and approving its budgets.
