Radford’s regional economic impact drives discussion at Onward NRV’s spring reception at Selu »

Radford University's Division of Economic Development and Corporate Education welcomed members of Onward NRV, a regional economic development non-profit, to Selu Conservancy for an overview of the 2022 Radford University Economic Impact Study during the organization's Spring Investor Reception on March 14.

The event was designed to give a localized look at Radford's extensive economic contributions and introduce Onward NRV members to the unique natural setting at Selu. Located just minutes from the main campus on 380 acres along the Little River, Selu offers abundant outdoor recreation options, a retreat center, and outdoor classroom and research space for Radford University students, including an observatory.

Released in December of 2023, the economic impact study provided a detailed view of Radford's statewide contributions, including a $421.7 million annual economic impact, 5,561 jobs, $2.2 billion in alumni spending and a $6.35 return on investment for every dollar of state funding.

When drilling down within the New River Valley - the city of Radford and the counties of Floyd, Giles, Montgomery and Pulaski - the university generates $280 million in alumni spending, $16.2 million in student spending and directly employs 1,173 faculty and staff with an annual payroll of $68.4 million.

"This positive impact on the New River Valley demonstrates how important the region is to us as an institution," said Charlie Jewell, Radford's director of Economic Development and Community Engagement, during a keynote presentation.

Jewell shared how the study is a factor in Radford University's recent economic development activities, which include further development of programming within The HUB at Radford for Economic Development and listening sessions with regional stakeholders, including local governments, chambers of commerce and tourism offices.

"Our goal is becoming an essential conduit for regional economic development," Jewell said. "You can view us as the front door of the university. We're here and ready to listen to hear your needs and connect."

"We believe that Radford University is woven into the fabric of our community," Angela Joyner, vice president for Economic Development and Corporate Education, told the audience. "Our goal is to change the lives of generations to come."

Onward NRV is a public/private regional economic development organization whose mission is to attract and retain world class jobs, investment and talent in the New River Valley. Approximately 75 members attended the event at Selu.

"The efforts of Radford University directly affect the talent pipeline and the quality of life we have in the New River Valley - the vibrancy and the makeup of the community that Radford influences is important to the region's success and the businesses that are here," said Samantha Livesay '12, senior director of business engagement for Onward NRV. "It's important to tap into the graduating talent, encourage them to plant their roots here and make this an even better place to work and live."

Investors in Onward NRV include the New River Valley's top businesses, nonprofit organizations, regional government bodies and higher education institutions, including Radford University.
