Our kids are the future: council celebrates the opening of new skate park with community
With blue skies and sunshine front of mind, crowds of eager youth gathered with their parents at North Park on Saturday for the opening of the new Stawell Skate Park.
The Stawell Skate Park project started as a priority highlighted within the Northern Grampians Youth Strategy in 2014, with several site reviews to establish the most appropriate location held in 2019, followed by design work in 2022 and construction in April 2023.
Mayor of Northern Grampians Shire, Cr Kevin Erwin, joined in the celebration, explaining that the work of the council is to balance the needs of the community with those of the various levels of government and the requirements of advocacy.
"The council began advocating for the project as soon as there was suitable funding tabled. The young people of our shire and the families who live here are the lifeblood of this town, and ultimately the work that we do is for them. This is something that we understand on a generational level in the Northern Grampians Shire. We try to ensure that the projects that mean the most to our residents are prioritised, because they are at the heart of everything that we do and their future matters to us. We would like each of our towns to offer the facilities that families need to thrive," said Cr Erwin.
The major redevelopment required 300 - 350 tonnes of concrete to construct and cost upwards of $655,000 - funded through a Federal Government Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Grant - and has delivered a modern space for all generations that will facilitate social activity and recreation within the community for years to come.
The Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program supports all Australian councils to deliver priority local road and community infrastructure projects in their region, creating jobs and long-lasting benefits for communities.
