This Wednesday, three shipments with a total of 516,000 pediatric Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine doses arrived at the Benito Juarez Mexico City International Airport (AICM), part of a donation from the South Korean government.
With these shipments, South Korea has now donated a total of 804,000 doses, which are not part of any contract. The doses will be used to immunize children ages 5-11 years.
The vaccines were shipped from Seoul, South Korea, and arrived at the Mexico City airport as follows: the first shipment arrived at 7:23 a.m. with 228,000 pediatric vaccine doses on flight UPS320; the second arrived at 7:51 a.m. with 144,000 doses on flight M71631; and the third shipment arrived at 9:01 a.m. with 144,000 doses on flight CJT952.
At the airport to receive the donation, the Director General of the National Center for Preventive Programs and Disease Control (Cenaprece), Ruy López Ridaura, said that to date more than 5.2 million children between the ages of five and 11 have received the COVID-19 pediatric vaccine.
He said that Mexico received eight million pediatric doses from Pfizer-BioNTech under contract, in addition to this donation of 804,000 doses donated by the South Korean government, which will make it possible to vaccinate 50 percent of children between the ages of five and 11.
He said that vaccinations have prevented more than 100,000 deaths from COVID-19 in Mexico, and in the pediatric population it has also reduced hospitalizations and deaths. Mexico has received a continuous supply of vaccines since the first shipment was received on December 23, 2020. To date, over 236 million doses have been received.
The Director General of Cenaprece said the pandemic has come in waves and is currently waning, but it is important to continue vaccinating the population in order to successfully conclude an effective, efficient strategy that has a positive impact on public health.
On behalf of Health Secretary Jorge Alcocer, López Ridaura thanked the Foreign Ministry for its help with acquiring vaccines by donation or contract, and he thanked the National Cancer Institute (INCan) for storing the doses in a way that ensures their conservation.
The Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Carmen Moreno, said the donation of 804,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine is the result of the agreements reached during recent political conversations.
She said that Mexico also has important economic ties with South Korea, its third-ranked trading partner and second-ranked source of investment, with 2,000 companies in Mexico that provide an estimated 150,000 jobs. She said they are working on joint initiatives for bilateral technical and scientific cooperation and triangular development for northern Central America.
On behalf of Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard, she thanked the South Korean government for the donations of medical supplies, tests and equipment in 2021 by both companies and the government to alleviate the effects of the pandemic. She also thanked it for its support in obtaining vitally important cancer drugs in record time.
"The donation we have received today is yet another example of the generosity of the people and the government of the Republic of Korea. It is support that we will know how to reciprocate," she said.
INCan Director General Abelardo Meneses García said that the first batch of vaccines that arrived in Mexico on December 23, 2020 was sent to INCan where they were kept in deep freeze while being distributed for their use.
He said that INCan is proud to participate in the National COVID-19 Vaccination Policy https://bit.ly/3zh8mdl , which has saved thousands of lives.
The South Korean ambassador to Mexico, Suh Jeong-in, said he was pleased with the support given by his country's government to the Government of Mexico to continue vaccinating girls and boys between the ages of five and 11, since children are the future.
He said that the aid is not only limited to vaccines but has also included anti-cancer drugs. "I hope that in the future the bilateral relationship grows and cooperation can be extended to different areas," he said.
The ceremony was also attended, for the Health Ministry, by Martha Caballero, and for the Foreign Ministry, by Mexico's ambassador to the Republic of South Korea, Bruno Figueroa, and the Director General for Asia Pacific, Fernando González Saiffe.
Personnel from Birmex Laboratories, Censia, the Federal Commission for the Protection against Health Risks (Cofepris), and 48 members of the Mexican Army participated in receiving, securing and transporting the vaccines.
From December 23, 2020 to date, 125 shipments of Pfizer vaccines have arrived in Mexico by contract and as donations, with a total of 63,236,445 doses for children from five to 11 years old, adolescents and adults.
Mexico has received 179,136,145 doses of vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca, Sinovac, Gamaleya National Research Center of Epidemiology and Microbiology, CanSino, Johnson & Johnson and Moderna.
In addition, the Drugmex laboratory in Mexico has fill-finished 14,024,840 doses of the CanSino vaccine, and the Liomont laboratory has fill-finished 42,991,100 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, for a total of 57,015,940 vaccine doses fill-finished nationally.
In all, since December 23, 2020, Mexico has made available 236,152,085 vaccine doses.
As of today, there have been 203 shipments on 217 flights, as follows:
