The City of Columbia and the Hyatt Park/Keenan Terrace Neighborhood Association Unveil Kiosk Recognizing History of Eau Claire Community

The City of Columbia and representatives of the Hyatt Park/Keenan Terrace Neighborhood Association will unveil a new three-sided kiosk at Hyatt Park that details the history of the Town of Eau Claire and its surrounding North Columbia communities. The kiosk features numerous photographs, maps, and historic information illustrating the Early Beginnings, Growth, and Modern Era of the Eau Claire Community.

In 2022, the Hyatt Park/Keenan Terrace Neighborhood Association, under the direction of former neighborhood association president Betsy Newman, received a $10,000 grant from the Richland County Conservation Commission to chronicle the history of Eau Claire/North Columbia development in the form of a publicly displayed kiosk. The new kiosk depicts details from a report titled "Survey of Eau Claire Historic Resources," sanctioned by the City of Columbia in 2018.

"It's important for all communities to preserve information about their history," said Columbia City Councilwoman Tina Herbert. "If we don't, people will forget historical events that new generations may never know."

Images and information include the annexation of Eau Claire, historic photographs of landmarks and buildings, public gatherings, horse drawn trolleys to the region, catastrophic fires at Columbia College, and more, and includes accounts of prominent Columbia figures whose lives and work influenced events in the area, the city, and the nation. The HPKT Neighborhood Association is grateful to Richland County Library, the South Carolina Library, and the City of Columbia Parks and Recreation Department for their assistance in the creation of the kiosk.
