Wilkes-Barre, PA (April, 2024) - Pam Mahasky, a registered nurse at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital for over 30 years, has received a national 2023 Nursing Excellence Award.

Mahasky is one of ten national winners selected across all hospitals affiliated with Community Health Systems, one of the leading operators of general acute-care hospitals and outpatient care centers in communities across the United States. The organization's affiliates include Wilkes-Barre General Hospital and 71 other hospitals in 15 states.

Pam was surprised with the recognition during a celebration event with hospital leadership where she was presented with a crystal plaque and a cash award.

"Pam is seen as a leader among her peers being described as a stellar mentor to new staff. She provides compassion and quality care to each patient and has made a lasting impression not only on her patients but also on her colleagues for over the last 30 years," said Chris Howe, interim Chief Executive Officer of Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. "Pam is a true asset to our hospital and we are happy to see her recognized with this award. "

The Nursing Excellence Award was created to honor the critical role nurses have played in treating patients to help them get well and live healthier lives. The peer-nominated award program was open to qualifying RNs and LPNs working in a direct patient care position who consistently demonstrate characteristics synonymous with nursing excellence. These characteristics include outstanding care, compassion, service and innovation, and reflect the efforts of someone who is a demonstrated team player and/or mentor to others, is a leader in times of crises, and who regularly promotes health in the community.

Mahasky joined Wilkes-Barre General Hospital in 1991 and has spent her entire career in the med-surg unit. She has held the positions of nurse preceptor and charge nurse while consistently demonstrating her strong work ethic, skills, clinical knowledge and compassion.

In addition to receiving the Nursing Excellence Award itself, Mahasky received a cash award and a gift box to recognize and express gratitude for extraordinary nursing.
