April 23, 2024: District Attorney Gascón Announces Charges Against Man in Break-in of Mayor Karen Bass’ Getty House Residence in L.A.

If convicted as charged, Ephraim Hunter faces 13 years and four months in prison.

LOS ANGELES, CA- Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced today that a man has been charged with breaking into the official Getty House residence of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass by shattering a rear glass door.

"I'm profoundly relieved that Mayor Karen Bass and her family emerged unharmed in this recent home break-in. The safety and security of all residents, including public officials, remain paramount in our community," District Attorney Gascón said. "While we're grateful for their physical safety, this violent intrusion will not be tolerated. We're fully committed to ensuring that the perpetrator is swiftly brought to justice and held accountable for his actions."

Ephraim Matthew Hunter (dob 10/22/1994) of Los Angeles has been charged in case 24CJCF02628 with one felony count of first-degree residential burglary with person present and one felony count of vandalism of $400 or more in damage or destruction of property.

Hunter pleaded not guilty at his arraignment today in Dept. 30 of the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center. His preliminary hearing setting was scheduled for May 6, 2024 in the same department and courthouse.

Heis being held in lieu of $100,000 bail. If convicted as charged he faces 13 years and four months in prison.

On April 21, 2024 at 6:40 a.m., Hunteris accused ofbreaking into the official Los Angeles home of Mayor Bass by smashing a rear glass door, causing between $5,000 and $10,000 worth of damage.

Hunter was cut by the glass and left blood stains throughout the house. Mayor Bass, her daughter, son-in-law and grandchild were inside.

The case is being investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department's Robbery-Homicide Division.
