Conversation with the GM
National Road Safety Week: 5 - 12 May
Next week is National Road Safety Week. Every year, approximately 1200 people are killed and another 40,000+* are seriously injured on Australian roads. Traffic injury is the biggest killer of Australian children under 15 and the second-biggest killer of all Australians aged between 15 and 24. These numbers are growing every year but are preventable if we choose to Drive So Others Survive!.
National Road Safety Week is an annual initiative from the Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH) Group, partnering road safety organisations and Government. The week highlights the impact of road trauma and ways to reduce it.
As part of the campaign, drivers are encouraged to take the pledge to drive safe so others survive.
Join me in support of National Road Safety Week and help make our roads safer for all road users. Drive so others survive - all road safety is local.
Animals on Country Roads
The onset of the cooler months and changes in travel patterns at the end of daylight savings in April, can mean there is an increased risk for motorists as animals are most active as the sun rises and sets.
Animal collisions can pose a big risk on country roads, especially at dusk and dawn. Wildlife, such as kangaroos, as well as livestock, can be fast and unpredictable. When they stray onto the road, it's hard to know what they'll do next. Slowing down and staying alert can help keep everyone safe.
Slow Down, Roadworkers Around
Road workers are some of the most vulnerable people on our roads and this includes many of our local resident Council staff. From 2016 to 2020, there were 39 people injured or killed in road crashes involving road workers in NSW.
Research suggests that many motorists admit to driving over the designated speed limit in road works, particularly if they believe there are no road workers present. However, this is not always the case, with many road workers experiencing countless near misses on a daily basis.
By going too fast and not paying attention to their surroundings, drivers are putting the road workers who are making our roads safer at risk.
Please slow down and drive under the designated speed limit at roadworks, look out for road workers and obey signals from traffic controllers.
