Launch of the second phase of the Electric Vehicle Working Group

  • This is a joint project with the University of California
  • The second stage focuses on making recommendations regarding the obstacles identified in the first stage of analysis

The second stage of the Electric Vehicle Working Group began on August 1 in Mexico. The working group is an initiative developed by the Foreign Ministry in collaboration with the University of California (Alianza MX). Its goal is to create a Mexico-United States roadmap to move towards electromobility in the region.

The second part of the project is currently being carried out in Mexico as hybrid meetings, and is focused on making recommendations regarding the obstacles identified in the first stage of analysis. There will be five meetings on human capital, innovation, provider development, infrastructure and governance.

The project is led by the Foreign Ministry's area for Global Economic Promotion, which is part of the Office of the Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights. The project will result in a binational one-year roadmap prepared by international academic experts from the University of California. It will have two parts: the first, a diagnosis of the global and regional transition to electromobility, with details of the situation and opportunities for Mexico and the United States, and the second will be based on recommendations from the first phase.

"The transition that we see towards the manufacture of electric vehicles is a reality throughout the world. In the Foreign Ministry, we have been working for several months to build a feasible scenario so that an industry that is so important to our economy and so integrated with that of the United States, can transition in optimal conditions. This is a triple helix project involving the government, industry and academia and aimed at achieving coordinated actions from an operational and regulatory point of view," said the Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights, Martha Delgado.

The project was presented at the Foreign Ministry on February 8. The working groups began to meet in May: Innovation on May 25, supplier development on May 31, infrastructure on June 6, governance on June 22, and human capital on June 27. Also participating were federal agencies, the U.S. government, state governments, business organizations, industry and academia.
