Cristiano Zanin Sworn in as Justice of the Supreme Federal Court (STF)

Appointed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Zanin assumes the position left vacant by Justice Ricardo Lewandowski, who retired in April.

In a solemn session held on Thursday afternoon (August 3), Cristiano Zanin took office as a Justice of the Federal Supreme Court (STF). The ceremony took place in the Court's Plenary, attended by Republic authorities, guests, and family members. With this swearing-in, the Supreme Court is once again complete with 11 justices.

Cristiano Zanin was nominated by the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and assumes the position left vacant by Justice Ricardo Lewandowski, who retired in April.

Ceremony
The ceremony began with the performance of the National Anthem by the Brazilian Marine Corps Band of Brasília. Following tradition, the new justice was escorted to the Plenary by the most senior justice, Gilmar Mendes, and the most recent justice of the Court, André Mendonça.

Zanin pledged to faithfully fulfill the duties of the position of Supreme Court justice in accordance with the Constitution and the laws of the Republic. He was declared sworn in by the President of the STF, Justice Rosa Weber. Subsequently, he was escorted by the two justices to his seat in the Plenary.

In a brief statement, the President of the STF welcomed the newly sworn-in justice on behalf of the Court. "I am convinced that Your Excellency, with your legal expertise, technical preparation, experience, and utmost kindness, will greatly enrich this Court," she said.

Dignitaries
The ceremony was attended by the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the President of the Federal Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira, and the Vice President of the Republic, Geraldo Alckmin. Also present in the Plenary were the Attorney General of the Republic (PGR), Augusto Aras, the President of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB), Beto Simonetti, the Attorney General of the Union, Jorge Messias, the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino, State Ministers, Presidents and Justices of Superior Courts, retired STF justices, and members of judges' associations.

Biography
Cristiano Zanin was born in Piracicaba (SP) on November 15, 1975, and graduated in 1999 from the Faculty of Law of the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo. He is married to fellow attorney Valeska Teixeira Zanin Martins and is the father of three children.

After the nomination by the President of the Republic, Zanin underwent a hearing and had his name approved by the Constitution and Justice Committee of the Federal Senate, and confirmed by the plenary on June 21. The appointment was published in the Official Gazette of the Union (DOU) on July 5.
