Families are invited to enjoy a free day out this school holidays at Westmead Innovation Quarter
Western Sydney University invites families to enjoy a free day of fun this school holidays at the brand new, state-of-the-art Westmead Innovation Quarter on Friday, 15 July.
The 'Western Sydney University Westmead Family Fun Day' is an exciting opportunity for children, parents, grandparents and seniors to come and explore the University and learn about its world-leading health and wellbeing research.
It will also be an opportunity to showcase the Westmead Innovation Quarter - the University's new $350 million health, medical and education research hub located in the heart of Westmead - to the community.
Families will be able to take part in a host of interactive activities across the day, including research demonstrations, immersive virtual tours of the world, wearable headsets that monitor the electrical activity of the brain, a robot piano, brain games, as well as tours of BabyLab and other innovative research spaces.
There will also be treasure hunts, arts and crafts, family yoga classes as well as food, drinks and lucky door prizes - with the first 100 families to register also receiving a special gift.
Professor Kate Stevens, Director of the MARCS Institute for Brain, Behaviour and Development, said opening the University's doors and sharing its research with the community is an important part of its mission.
"We are delighted to be able to welcome families and friends to the Westmead Innovation Quarter this school holidays where they can interact with our cutting-edge research and facilities and learn more about how our research is having a positive impact on the health and wellbeing of our communities," said Professor Stevens.
Dr Joyce Siette, Research Theme Fellow Health and Wellbeing at the University, encourages locals to register for the free day out.
"This is a fantastic opportunity for us to share our research with our local community. Everyone will be able to get an inside look at what we are working on and get involved themselves," said Dr Siette.
"There will be plenty of activity for all ages, whether you have kids under one or want to bring grandparents along, this is sure to be a fun day for all."
The Family Fun Day is a collaboration between a number of the University's leading institutes based at Westmead - the MARCS Institute for Brain, Behaviour and Development, Translational Health Research Institute (THRI), NICM Health Research Institute, and Transforming early Education and Child Health Research Centre (TeEACH).
The Westmead Innovation Quarter is home to several of the University's innovative research facilities. These include the Lifespan Labs - BabyLab which conducts research into the development of cognitive, social and emotional skills of infants, and Age Lab which investigates changes in perception and cognition as people age.
The Family Fun Day will include two sessions that each run for two hours, starting at 10am and 1pm, with activities for all ages.
