90-Day Closure and Detour for Replacement of SR 42/North Druid Hills Road Bridge to Begin April 26
Atlanta, Ga.- Weather permitting, Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) contractors are expected to close the State Route (SR) 42/North Druid Hills Road bridge over North Fork Peachtree Creek on the evening of Friday, April 26 for 90 days. This full roadway closure between Buford Highway and West Druid Hills Drive will expedite the demolition and reconstruction of the current bridge built in 1962 and maintain public safety during active bridge construction.

During the three-month period, motorists will utilize a signed 5-mile detour route. Drivers will still have open access from the Interstate 85 interchange (Exit 89) and properties adjacent to the bridge work zone during this time.

"Georgia DOT asks that you prepare as we anticipate this full closure and detour will cause disruptions for travelers on North Druid Hills Road," said Albert (Butch) Welch, Georgia DOT Project Manager. "If traveling through the area, we urge motorists to plan ahead, remain patient in the face of delays, pay attention, and use caution."

Sidewalks over North Fork Peachtree Creek will be closed during the bridge replacement for public safety. The recommended pedestrian detour route will utilize the Peachtree Creek Greenway Path, Corporate Boulevard, and Buford Highway.

Additional traffic pattern changes will include one lane in each direction leading up to the bridge. Traffic at North Druid Hills Road and the West Druid Hills Drive intersection will be managed using stop signs.

"Our top priority at GDOT is to keep motorists and pedestrians safe and help them move efficiently through one of the fastest-growing centers of commerce anywhere," said Stacey Key, State Transportation Board Member, 5th Congressional District. "Occasionally, this requires all of us to make short-term sacrifices so GDOT can implement improvements and make repairs that will enhance our mobility and enrich the quality of life for everybody in the Atlanta region. I want to thank my neighbors and local community in advance for their patience as we prepare for the upcoming 90-day closure."

The bridge replacement is part of the larger I-85 at SR 42/North Druid Hills Road Interchange improvement project now underway. The new bridge structure will be wider and safer for increasing traffic levels in the area and will be beneficial for pedestrians with wider sidewalks and ADA compliant ramps at crosswalks.
Detour Map
The posted detour route will follow I-85 northbound to Exit 91, SR 155/Clairmont Road, and then turn onto SR 13/Buford Highway. This detour is approximately 5 miles long, 15 minutes.
