OSMRE announces $62.4 million in grants to protect people and the environment from the adverse effects of coal mining

WASHINGTON - As part of the Biden-Harris administration's efforts toensure that coal mines are operated in a manner that protects citizens and the environment during mining, the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement announced today the availability of $62.4 million in fiscal year 2024 grants to help states operate their surface coal mining regulatory programs.

"Regulatory grants are important for providing eligible states with the necessary resources to protect human health, safety and the environment," said OSMRE Principal Deputy Director Sharon Buccino. "The funds also support much-needed job creation for coal-producing states and Tribes."

States and Tribes receive grants to establish and administer regulatory programs on non-federal lands on a 50/50 match basis. If a state or Tribe elects to administer an approved regulatory program on federal lands, OSMRE will reimburse the state for up to 100 percent of the costs incurred. Funds are used for permitting, inspection, and enforcement actions that protect the coal communities and the environment during coal mining.
