National Society of Professional Engineers Issues Statement on Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapse

NSPE is saddened by the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore, Maryland, and the tragic loss of life on March 26. Our deepest condolences go out to the victims, their families, and the citizens of Baltimore at this time. As an organization of licensed professional engineers (PEs), we value the public's health, safety, and welfare above all else.

In addition to the tragic human toll, we know that the Francis Scott Key Bridge and the Port of Baltimore have been a critical part of our nation's infrastructure. This collapse will result in significant disruptions to global supply chains and the local, regional, and national economy.

"In these challenging times, let us reaffirm our commitment to our values of ethics, accountability, and professionalism," stated NSPE President Bill Atkinson, P.E., F.NSPE. "Together, we will navigate through this crisis, supporting one another and upholding the highest standards of engineering excellence for the betterment of society."

NSPE will monitor the investigation into the collapse and will stand in support of the federal, state, and local officials and agencies responsible for the recovery and rebuilding efforts. We are encouraged that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is playing a significant role in the recovery activities by leading the effort to clear the channel and providing assessment capabilities by structural professional engineers.

The Maryland Society of Professional Engineers issued the following statement:

"In the wake of the tragic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, we are poignantly reminded of the crucial role professional engineers play in safeguarding our communities. Our thoughts are with those lives lost and we stand strong supporting our Baltimore engineers."

NSPE stands ready to provide assistance and resources to our members, communities, and all those affected by this tragedy. NSPE is dedicated to ensuring that public health, welfare, and safety will stay at the forefront as we work toward recovery and move forward with rebuilding.
