Victims Rescued from Overturned Motorhomes Following Overnight Storm
On the evening of Thursday, May 16, 2024, at 11:46 p.m., the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) responded to a call reporting several persons possibly trapped inside of overturned recreational vehicles (RV) following overnight storms accompanied by severe winds. Dispatched to 6001 France Rd., the New Orleans RV Resort and Marina, the first of seven NOFD units staffed with twenty-one Fire Operations personnel arrived on the scene at 11:55 p.m. Upon entering the RV park, firefighters were directed to three overturned recreational vehicles, two were observed on their sides and one was flipped upside-down onto its roof, just three feet from the Industrial Canal.
Two victims were extricated from RV #1, one of whom was transported to an area hospital to be further evaluated for bruises and abrasions received. RV #2 was the motorhome that had flipped onto its roof. The occupant of this RV was also transported to an area hospital following extraction by firefighters. The extent of this victim's injuries is unknown. The third RV contained two trapped individuals that were extricated by NOFD and transported to an area hospital by New Orleans Emergency Medical Services (NOEMS) to be evaluated for possible injuries received. The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) was requested to scene along with a wrecker to remove RV #2 away from the water's edge. There were no firefighter injuries reported and the extent and severity of injures received by the four civilians transported by NOEMS is unknown at this time.
Entergy Electric was also called to the scene to disconnect the electricity to the entire lot so that the extent of total damages could be evaluated. This incident was place under control at 1:16 a.m.
