JUNE 7, 2023 - The U.S. Census Bureau today announced the beginning of data collection for phase 3.9 of the experimental Household Pulse Survey (HPS). The HPS is an effort by the Census Bureau and other federal statistical agencies to inform federal and state response and recovery planning by providing near real-time data on the social and economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and other emergent issues on American households.

Phase 3.9 includes new and updated questions:

• New:
  
  • Detailed race and ethnicity questions.
  • Use of antivirals to treat COVID.
  • How households obtain COVID tests.
  • Use of infant formula with babies.
  • Children's mental health treatment.
  • Pressure to move from current residence.
• Updated:
  • Existing children's vaccine booster.
  • COVID testing.
  • Infant formula.
  • Reasons not working.
  • Unemployment insurance.
  • Medicaid.
  • Inflation items.

Some previously asked questions have been removed:

• Replacing the current race/ethnicity items.
  
• Receipt of updated COVID vaccines.
• Intent to vaccinate children.
• Childcare arrangements.
• Children's mental health and behaviors.
• Current rent amount.
• Use of emergency rental assistance.
• How Children receive their education.

The Census Bureau is set to release data from this phase June 28, July 19 and August 16. HPS results are available on our website through the Household Pulse Survey Interactive Tool, detailed tables and a public-use data file.
