The nineteenth of February will mark the 550th birth anniversary of Nicolaus Copernicus - an outstanding Polish astronomer, mathematician, economist, lawyer, doctor, astrologer and translator who formulated the heliocentric theory and authored "On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres".

Deputy Minister Piotr Wawrzyk laid flowers at the Nicolaus Copernicus Monument to commemorate the 550th anniversary of the astronomer's birth.

To highlight this special date, the Polish Sejm proclaimed the year 2023 the Copernicus Year. On the same day, we also observe the Polish Science Day, established in 2020 by the Polish Sejm to commemorate the achievements of Polish scientists and to remind of the crucial role that science played in the development of civilisation.

In commemoration of Copernicus' birth anniversary, Deputy Minister Piotr Wawrzyk laid flowers at the astronomer's monument and unveiled the exhibition "Nicolaus Copernicus. Life and work", prepared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with the Archives of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Professor Marek Konarzewski, President of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and Hanna Krajewska, PhD, Head of the Academy's Archives, were among other participants of the event.
