Mayor Broome Applauds Sheriff Sid Gautreaux's Launch of New Gang Unit

Baton Rouge, LA - April 11, 2024 - Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome expressed her full support and commendation for Sheriff Sid Gautreaux's initiative in the public launch of a new gang unit as part of the concerted effort to combat group violence in the parish. This comes after several citywide law enforcement meetings Mayor Broome called in recent weeks, where she emphasized to local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies the urgent need for all law enforcement agencies to intensify their strategies and allocate more resources to address the pressing issue of group violence within the community.

"Today's action by Sheriff Gautreaux was another significant step forward in the parish's collective endeavor to address public safety and steer crime statistics back to the downward trajectory they were on. Over the last few weeks I have had many conversations with our law enforcement partners to gain shared commitments to enhance collaboration and bolster efforts in tackling the root causes of criminal activity. We will continue to work with all local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies regularly to leave no stone unturned in creating a safer Baton Rouge," said Mayor Broome.

Last month, the Baton Rouge Police Department also created its own Special Investigations Unit, in which various local, state, and federal task force members are consolidated to prioritize dismantling criminal activities perpetrated by groups and gangs. Chief T.J. Morse has also made organizational changes within BRPD including creating an overtime program for officers to intensify patrols in areas of concern in the city.

Mayor Broome emphasizes the importance of sustained collaboration and proactive measures in ensuring the safety and well-being of the community. She remains committed to working alongside law enforcement agencies, community leaders, and residents to uphold public safety and create a thriving environment for all.
