Learn how to dispose of construction materials

Whether you're landscaping outdoors or redoing a room in your home, keep in mind that construction materials are not accepted in the City of Vaughan's curbside garbage collection program.

In particular, the following items must be taken to a York Region waste depotfor safe disposal (fees may apply):

  • cabinets

  • drywall

  • fencing

  • flooring

  • paint

  • shingles

  • sinks

  • tiles

  • vanities

  • windows

  • wood

There is a York Region waste depot located in Vaughan at 130 McCleary Crt. Visit york.ca/WasteDepotsfor more information, including hours of operation.

If you're unsure if your item is collected curbside, don't guess - check!

Use the City's online 'What Goes Where?' sorting tool to search for an item and learn where to dispose of it. You can also download the free Recycle Coach app from the Apple App Storeor Google Playfor more sorting help. The app also provides waste-less tips and a personalized collection schedule with optional alerts on what to put to the curb each week.

Toilets

For the safety of our waste collectors, you must separate the toilet tank from the bowl for all two-piece toilets before placing it curbside. Crews will not collect toilets that are not separated. Need help disassembling yours? Watch this short videoto learn how!

Do not place the toilet in a cardboard box unless it has broken into smaller pieces. Broken pieces must be placed in a cardboard box labelled "broken glass" and taped shut securely to prevent injury to collection staff.

Residential appliance and metal pickup

If you're looking to dispose of large metal items and appliances, the City collects these on Thursdays by appointment only. Book a pickup time and pay online through Service Vaughanor call 905-832-2281. For more information, visit the City's appliance and metal pick upwebpage.
