Chairman Scott Praises Biden-Harris Administration for Preserving Access to School Meals

WASHINGTON - Chairman Robert C. 'Bobby' Scott (VA-03) released the following statement after the Biden-Harris Administration withdrew a Trump-era proposal that would have terminated automatic eligibility for free school meals for roughly 1 million students.

'When the Trump Administration first proposed denying 1 million children automatic eligibility for free school meals, I raised awareness of the severe impact of this rule and called on the Administration to abandon its counterproductive proposal. Two years later, the Biden-Harris Administration's decision to withdraw this rule is a major victory for students, families, and educators that demonstrates our shared commitment to preventing child hunger.

'Over the past year, Congress has taken decisive action to confront the pandemic-fueled surge in child hunger and provide families the support they need to keep food on the table. By expanding the Child Tax Credit, enhancing the Earned Income Tax Credit, and investing in proven emergency child nutrition programs, the American Rescue Plan is estimated to cut child poverty nearly in half.

'But we cannot be satisfied with our progress while children in our communities are still going hungry. I am committed to working with the White House and my colleagues in Congress to pass the long-term investments in the American Jobs Plan and American Families Plan - as well as a comprehensive Child Nutrition Reauthorization - that will provide the basic foundation our children need to succeed.'
