New Estonian ambassador to Italy presented his credentials

Yesterday 24 September, Estonia's new ambassador to Italy Paul Teesalu presented his credentials to President Sergio Mattarella.

After the presentation ceremony, President Sergio Mattarella and Ambassador Paul Teesalu discussed the relations of Estonia and Italy, the tasks facing Europe and the joint fight against the coronavirus.

'Estonia and Italy have excellent bilateral relations, we are strong allies in the European Union and NATO,' Ambassador Teesalu said. 'In today's complicated international environment it is particularly important to have strong relations and shared views with our closest partners, which Italy certainly is for Estonia,' he added.

Before his appointment to Italy, Paul Teesalu was the Undersecretary for Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 2010 to 2014, he was the Estonian ambassador to Egypt, from 2011 to 2014, he served as the ambassador to the Arab League and between 2013 and 2015, he was Estonia's first ambassador to the African Union. From 2018 until his arrival in Italy, he served as Estonia's ambassador to the Holy See, residing in Tallinn. He has previously worked as the policy director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in Estonia's missions to NATO and the OSCE.
