MINOT, N.D. - Senator John Hoeven today marked the completion of Souris Heights, a 100 percent affordable housing facility for low-income tenants age 55 and up in Minot. The $14 million project, which was developed by Beyond Shelter and the Minot Housing Authority, includes 54 units all with rents set at affordable levels and amenities such as dishwashers, air conditioning and in-unit washer and dryers, as well as a community space with dining, kitchen, fitness center, lounge, salon, patio and a guest room. Construction began in May 2021, with the building being finished in November 2022 and landscaping completed in spring 2023. The project was able to move forward due to $6.4 million in federal support that Hoeven worked to secure, including:
As a member of the Senate Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (THUD) Appropriations Committee, Hoeven has worked throughout his time in the Senate to ensure strong support for federal programs like these, which enable developers to leverage private investment in affordable housing projects.
"The Souris Heights project is a perfect example of how we can leverage federal resources to help state, local and private partners provide the affordable housing needed to meet the demands of our growing state and its dynamic economy," said Hoeven. "The NDRC award that we secured for Minot was key in making this new housing option available to low-income senior in the area. We appreciate Beyond Shelter for their continued work to bring together all of the different pieces required to deliver affordable housing to our communities."
In addition to the federal funding, the Souris Heights project received more than $2 million from the state-based Housing Incentive Fund and $1 million under the Bank of North Dakota's Flex Pace program.
