The new league phase of the UEFA Champions League has presented the fans with a quick repeat of the final from 1 June 2024: Borussia Dortmund will visit Real Madrid on one of the eight matchdays. UEFA will announce on Saturday when that will be. This Thursday, world-stars "Gigi" Buffon and Cristiano Ronaldo drew the opponents of the 36 participating clubs.

There will be eight matchdays in the league phase (two more than previously) - and eight rather than three opponents. There will be only one match against each opponent, either home or away. The BVB fans can look forward to home games against Barcelona, Celtic, Sturm Graz and Shakhtar Donetsk. The away destinations will be Madrid, Bruges, Zagreb and Bologna. It is an interesting mixture of high-quality and in some cases also history-laden match-ups.

The home opponents

\n

Barcelona
The five-time winners of the European Cup (most recently in 2015) are taking part in the UEFA Champions League for the 30th time. Last season, the Catalans were eliminated at the quarter-final stage by Paris Saint-Germain despite a 3-2 away victory; otherwise, the third meeting between Borussia and Barca - plus a reunion with Robert Lewandowski - would have already taken place. The Black & Yellows are still unbeaten at home against Barcelona: BVB drew 1-1 (H) and lost 2-0 (A) in the European Super Cup matches in 1997, while the 2019/20 Champions League campaign produced a 0-0 stalemate in Dortmund and the hosts ran out 3-1 victors in the return fixture.

\n

Shakhtar Donetsk
\n The away game would have taken place in Gelsenkirchen, but this is a home game, for the third time after 2001 (3-0) and 2013 (3-0). With one exception, Ukraine's champions have been in the competition every season since 2010. Their biggest success was reaching the 2011 quarter-final against Barcelona.

\n

Celtic
\n 54-time Scottish champions, 42-time cup winners - and an absolute fan favourite. BVB went through to the next round in both their UEFA Cup clashes in 1987/88 and 1991/92. Celtic won the European Cup in 1967, and by qualifying for the UEFA Champions League for the 13th time, they have pushed their great rivals Rangers down into second place. Brendan Rodgers' team will come to Dortmund as reigning champions and cup winners.

Sturm Graz
\n In their fourth campaign in Europe's elite club competition, Austria's champion will face BVB on the international stage for the first time. The team have cemented their form with three wins from the first four domestic matchdays. Last season, they were eliminated from the Conference League by Lille in the round of 16.

Real Madrid

There have already been 15 meetings between the two clubs, most recently in last season's final (2-0). From a Dortmund perspective, there have been three wins, five draws and seven defeats. With 15 triumphs in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League, two UEFA Cup victories and 13 other international titles, Real are the most successful football club in the world. There will be a quick reunion with the two former Borussia players. Jude Bellingham and Antonio RĂŒdiger, as well as Kylian MbappĂ©, who played for Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-final last season.

\n

Club Brugge
\n Borussia Dortmund have already visited the Jan Breydel Stadion four times and have learned that the 19-time Belgian champions are not to be underestimated. A 3-0 lead from the UEFA Cup round of 16 first leg was squandered in December 1987, with the second leg ending in a 5-0 defeat after extra-time, while the 2-1 loss in the Champions League qualifying round first leg in the summer of 2003 marked the start of the darkest economic chapter in the club's history. But recently, BVB have taken the points: thanks to a lucky goal from Christian Pulisic in 2018 (1-0) and a comfortable 3-0 win in the corona winter of 2020.

\n \n
\n \n
\n \n
\n\n

Dinamo Zagreb
\n The most successful club in Croatia: 25-time champions, 17-time cup winners and four-time Yugoslav champions before that. Their biggest international success was winning the Fairs Cup, the predecessor to the UEFA Cup, in 1967. They have met German clubs on 19 occasions, but have not yet come up against BVB. It will be a hotly contested affair at Stadion Maksimir, which is limited to a capacity of 24,851 for international matches.

\n

Bologna
\n Founded in 1909, seven-time Italian champions, most recently in 1964. It is the club's first participation in an official UEFA competition since 1999/2000 and their first involvement in the most important club competition in 60 years. Like BVB, last season's fifth-place club in Serie A qualified via the \"European Performance Spots\". Coach Thiago Motta, who regularly changes the starting line-up, is an advocate of unorthodox methods. The \"Renato Dall'Ara\" can hold 36,462 spectators.
