July 20th, 2021
'G20 Environment, Climate and Energy', Italy's great ambition: to reconcile environmental protection with progress and human wellbeing, placing the ecological transition at the centre of the political agenda, and promoting a coordinated and global response to pandemics that is based on science.
The G20 Ministerial meeting in Naples on 22 and 23 July will provide an overview that draws upon the content of many months of meetings, exchange of experiences and discussions between the international delegations and technicians engaged in identifying coordinated, effective and equitable responses to lay the foundations for a prosperous and sustainable future.
The Italian Presidency, aware of its task, has put forward key proposals at global level to spur the international community towards ambitious goals. Indeed, 2021 is a crucial year for ecological transition and climate, with a number of global events taking place in the coming months: the Conference of the Parties (COP) of the three Rio Conventions on Climate Change, Biodiversity and Desertification (UNFCCC COP26, CBD COP 15 and UNCCD COP 15), the launch of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, the United Nations Food Systems Summit and the United Nations Ocean Conference.
The key topics of the discussion will include: combating climate change, accelerating the ecological transition, making financial flows consistent with the Paris Agreement objectives, opportunities for sustainable and inclusive recovery enabled by innovative technological solutions of the energy sector, and building smart, resilient and sustainable cities.
The ecological transition can no longer be postponed and must be socially sustainable. A new path starts from Naples and will see Italy increasingly at the forefront to accelerate the transition and to ensure that no one is left behind.
