Mayor Bronson Applauds State Senate Finance Committee for $4 Million Funding Boost to Secure Year-Round Anchorage Homeless Shelter Operations

Anchorage, Alaska - Today, the State Senate Finance Committee took action to secure $4 million to help fund a year-round homeless shelter in Anchorage. Mayor Bronson expressed his support saying, "we recognize the process is not over, but we are encouraged by the strong bipartisan support we have had so far to secure this essential funding that will ensure a year-round shelter for our homeless population."

Anchorage is currently home to approximately 65% of the state's homeless population. As of now, emergency cold weather shelter is decompressing with all shelters scheduled to close on May 31, 2024. "Keeping 200 people off the streets will benefit the community as a whole," said Housing and Homelessness Coordinator Alexis Johnson. "The data shows us that more people die outside in the summertime than in winter months and that is due to lack of shelter and the compassionate accountability the operator holds its residents to, so this funding is truly saving lives."
