Meet Felicite Toney: Community of Readers Librarian

Felicite Toney is adventurous and always up for a challenge, including collaborating on Hillsboro Public Library's signature event, Hillsboro Reads: Local Authors. Pretty impressive for someone who joined the department a few months ago! We asked her some questions to get to know her better.

Felicite, what experiences in your life led you to work in libraries?

I've always been an avid reader, so choosing a career in public libraries just made sense. I can't see myself doing any other kind of work. I enjoy interacting with people and connecting them with resources, especially books!

Why did you choose to work for the City of Hillsboro as the Community of Readers Librarian?

I was interested in the idea of "a community of readers" and wanted to explore the possibilities of programs, services, and events that the library could host or support.

What does Community of Readers mean for community members?

My role is to engage with the community and open the door to intergenerational discussions through books. Being part of a community of readers means you are invited to connect with your community through conversation. Books are tools we can use to bring us closer together.

What projects and goals are you focusing on in your first year with Hillsboro Public Library?

I'm focused on creating and maintaining relationships with local authors so we can support our local creators and give them a way to engage with the community and encourage others to read, write, and create.

What was your favorite aspect of this year's Hillsboro Reads: Local Authors event?

I enjoyed connecting with local authors and creators! I'm new to the area, so working on the author expo gave me the opportunity to learn about the community.

What else do you want people to know about you?

I don't always read the book before I watch the movie - and that's okay!

What are the top questions patrons ask you?

Patrons are always curious about what librarians are reading, so I am often asked for suggestions. It's a win-win because this is my favorite question!
