Fontana Receives $2 Million to Advance Work in Improving Mobility, Air Quality and Traffic Safety

The City of Fontana has received a $2 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation, announced by U.S. Representative Norma Torres (CA-35) this week. This funding will support the Fontana SMART Stage 1 project, which aims to improve traffic management along three corridors heavily used by trucks from nearby logistics centers.

The project will use advanced technologies like adaptive signal systems and digital infrastructure to reduce congestion, minimize idling, and enhance safety at nine intersections. This initiative aligns with Fontana's commitment to balancing economic development with public health and safety.

Fontana has been recognized for its efforts to promote economic growth while meeting stringent environmental standards. Most notably in 2022, the City Council enacted the Industrial Commerce Center Sustainability Standards Ordinance to exceed state and federal regulations for warehouse and freight operations.

"We are truly grateful for the support of Congresswoman Torres in securing this funding, which will help us further our work in improving mobility, air quality, and traffic safety," said Fontana Mayor Acquanetta Warren. "Through the commitment of our City Council and staff, Fontana has set the standard for maximizing the economic and employment benefits that logistics operations provide in a way that is consistent with the quality-of-life needs of our residents and community."

"Our communities deserve safe, high-quality transportation infrastructure that ensures the safe and efficient transport of passengers and freight cargo while mitigating climate impacts," said Congresswoman Norma Torres.

Fontana's industrial and goods movement sectors provide significant employment opportunities and contribute to the nation's supply chain resilience. The SMART Stage 1 project will target areas with heavy truck traffic, particularly those involved in first-mile/last-mile deliveries, to enhance overall transportation efficiency.

Overall, this federal grant signifies a significant step forward for Fontana in its efforts to promote sustainable economic growth and prioritize the well-being of its residents and stakeholders. The technological and systems improvements will be at these nine intersections:
