Mayor Danise "Dee Dee" Henriquez and a number of City dignitaries had the honor of boarding the American Cruise Lines' American Legend on Wednesday to welcome the brand new vessel to Key West.
The cruise line named Mayor Henriquez the Godmother of the ship, and she christened it by breaking a bottle of champagne on the bow.
"As we stand here," she said, "we are not just celebrating the culmination of skilled craftsmanship, but also the promise of countless memories to be made aboard this ship.
"The tradition of christening a ship is deeply rooted in maritime history, signifying a blessing of safety and good fortune, and smooth seas for all who sail upon her.
"As we watch the bottle of champagne shatter against the hull," she continued, "let us envision the journeys ahead - the sunrises over the open sea, the vibrant ports you will visit, the cultural encounters that await you, and the moments of pure joy that will be etched in your hearts. May this ship sail with purpose, always returning safely to its home, carrying the hopes and dreams of all who step aboard."
This is the second American Cruise Line ship to be christened in Key West. In January of 2024, then-Mayor Teri Johnston broke a bottle on the bow of the American Glory.
In addition to officially naming the vessel, Mayor Henriquez and the company's CEO Charlie Robertson exchanged plaques, a tradition of the City with any ship arriving here for its first Key West port call.
