Justice Rosa Weber becomes Chief Justice of the STF after 46 years as a judge

The new Chief Justice has been in charge of actions that have had an impact on several areas of law and have had political and social repercussions.

This Monday, Justice Rosa Weber takes office as Chief Justice of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) and of the National Council of Justice (CNJ). She is the third woman to occupy the highest post in the Brazilian Judiciary, after a 46-year career in the judiciary. Justice Luís Roberto Barroso will be sworn in as deputy Chief Justice.

Born in Porto Alegre (RS), Rosa Weber joined the judiciary in 1976, as a substitute Labor Court judge. When she was elected, she said she intends to perform the function with serenity and the support of the other ministers, always in defense of the integrity and sovereignty of the Constitution and the democratic regime.

Career

Rosa Weber graduated in Legal and Social Sciences from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in 1971. She served as a labor court judge from 1976 to 1991 and was a member of the Regional Appellate Labor Court of the 4th Region (RS) from 1991 to 2006. She presided over the TRT-4 from 2001 to 2003. From 2006 to 2011, she was a Justice at the Superior Labor Court (TST), until she was appointed to the STF, where she took office on December 19, 2011. She presided over the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) from 2018 to 2020 and is the author of several articles.
