Kaptur Statement on Biden-Netanyahu Phone Call and Developments in Israel and GazaPress Release

Toledo, Ohio - Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09), a senior Member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee On Defense released the following statement:

"Encouraged by President Biden's strong statement today to move the Israeli-Hamas conflict in Gaza to resolution, I urge efforts that lead to the return of more than 100 Israeli, American, and other hostages that remain in Hamas captivity following the October 7th invasion of Israel. I also urge President Biden to formalize an international structure to help bring this continued bloodshed to an end.

"Western assistance must include the provision of humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza, the West Bank, and impacted communities in Israel. I was encouraged to see reports this evening that the Israeli Cabinet has approved the reopening of the northern Erez Crossing, and opening of the Port of Ashdod to help facilitate the faster flow of humanitarian aid to those in desperate need of food and supplies in Gaza.

"Despite objections from Prime Minister Netanyahu, ultimately the United States and allies in the United Nations and those in the region must help to broker a negotiated truce to achieve a true lasting peace that can one day lead to a Two-State Solution. This must be predicated on negotiations to achieve necessary military protections for how to maintain an accord, along with economic incentives to secure the promise of peace and justice for all.

"Because this region is heavily impacted by terrorist organizations - Hamas, Houthis, and Hezbollah - many of which are supported by Iran, and Russia - negotiations must be launched through the United Nations. In 1948, the UN at the urging of US President Harry Truman recognized the free nation of Israel. America was the first nation to recognize its founding minutes after it had occurred following the tragic events of the Holocaust and World War II. The very long history of this region reflects being subjugated to occupation by numerous colonial powers and the resultant instability of national borders. Among the nations that should be engaged in such negotiations would be those that have recognized Israel, respect the rule of law, reject terrorism, and support the creation of a Palestinian state."

In January, Congresswoman Kaptur authored an opinion article describing the importance of the United Nation's role in establishing a lasting and permanent peace for both the Israeli and Palestinian people.
