The Council will host the free event on Saturday 25 May which aims to raise awareness of the value of trees.

The Keeping Ku-ring-gai Green event is part of a new program the Council is implementing to protect and grow the local tree canopy.

The Council's Urban Forest Strategy has an overall goal of increasing Ku-ring-gai's tree canopy from its current 45% to 49% by 2036.

Part of the plan would see more street trees planted across Ku-ring-gai, starting with a pilot project in Roseville.

Residents can come along to the event on Saturday 25 May between 10am and 12 noon, which will be held in Bancroft Park, Bancroft Road Roseville.

Free coffee and a sausage sizzle are on offer, as well as native plant giveaways. Council staff will be on hand to explain the benefits of street tree planting and how residents can get involved.

Mayor Sam Ngai said the Council was working hard to boost the number of local trees on private and public property.

"Despite the challenges posed by the state government's new housing policies, we are committed to protecting and growing Ku-ring-gai's trees," he said.

"Trees cool down our streets and homes and provide irreplaceable habitat for native birds and animals. There are so many reasons to love trees."

No RSVPs are needed for the Keeping Ku-ring-gai Green event; more details are available at krg.nsw.gov.au/whatson
