PRESS RELEASE BY THE OFFICE OF THE SPEAKER A Delegation from the Konrad-Adenauer Stiftung and the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies pays a courtesy visit on the Speaker

A delegation from the Konrad-Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) and the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies (MEDAC) paid a courtesy visit on Speaker of the House of Representatives Anġlu Farrugia. ​

The delegation headed by Prof Norbert Lammert, Chairman of the KAS and former President of the German Bundestag, included Dr Thomas Volk, Director Regional Program Political Dialogue South Mediterranean of KAS, Dr Nino Galletti, Director, Italy and Malta of KAS, Prof Godfrey Pirotta, Chairman of MEDAC and Prof Stephen Calleya, Director of MEDAC.

During the meeting Speaker Farrugia and the delegation addressed several issues pertaining to the Mediterranean Sea as well as current and ongoing challenges in Europe and the Middle East. The main issues discussed included:

  • The Mediterranean's role as a bridge between continents and civilizations, with Malta serving as a significant geopolitical point in this contest.
  • Malta's strategic location and its role in the Euro-Mediterranean relations.
  • The importance of parliamentary diplomacy in shaping foreign policy.
  • Malta's role as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

Both sides referred to the current situations in Europe and the Middle East and recognized that the international community needs to do more to ensure peace and stability in both regions and beyond. They also emphasised the importance of a ceasefire followed by a structured dialogue aimed at bringing hostilities to an end.
