The tourist accommodation sector registered 3.8 million guests and 10.5 million overnight stays in August 2024, corresponding to variations of +5.9% and +3.8%, respectively (+1.7% and +2.6% in July 2024, in the same order). After declining in July, residents' overnight stays rose by 4.6%, outpacing non-resident growth (+3.4%), which slowed for the third consecutive month. Residents' overnight stays totaled 3.6 million and non-resident overnight stays 6.9 million.
In external markets, the British remained the main one (17.1% share), growing by 1.3% in August, followed by the Spanish market (16.3% share), which grew by 4.6%. Among the top 10 main inbound markets in August, Canada and United States stood out with growth rates of 11.2% and 8.4% respectively.
All regions recorded an increase in overnight stays in August, with the exception of RA Madeira (-0.3%). The highest increases were recorded in the Peninsula de Setúbal (+8.1%) and RA Açores (+7.5%), while the Algarve (+1.1%) and Oeste e Vale do Tejo (+1.6%) recorded more modest growth rates.
Occupancy in tourist accommodation establishments increased in August, to 67.9% and 74.3% for net bed and room occupancy rates, respectively (+0.6 p.p. in both).
