IDEC Celebrations and Observations in December 2023

The City's Inclusion Diversity Equity and Awareness Commission honors federally recognized heritage and history months throughout the year as part of our commitment to building an inclusive community that values diversity.

We recognize International Day of Peoples with Disabilities on December 3 to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities and to:

• recognize and value the diversity of our global community, and to cherish the role we all play, regardless of our abilities
• understand and learn from the experiences of people with living with a disability
• look towards the future and the creation of a world where a person is not characterized by their disabilities, but by their abilities
• encourage all people, organizations, agencies, and charities to not only show their support for International Day of People with Disabilities, but take on a commitment to create a world characterized by equal human rights

We also celebrate International Human Rights Day December 10. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This landmark document enshrines the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being - regardless of race, color, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. The United Nations General Assembly announced the declaration in Paris on December 10, 1948 and set out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected.
