Cook Government welcomes hydrogen grand prix for WA schools

  • The Cook Government welcomes the Horizon Hydrogen Grand Prix (H2GP) for high school students
  • Students to design, construct and race hydrogen-powered remote-controlled small cars
  • H2GP aligns with the State STEM Skills Strategy by encouraging young people to study STEM, showcasing industry linkages, and building STEM culture

The Cook Government has welcomed Chevron's initiative to host the world's largest hydrogen grand prix for Western Australian schools for the first time.

Twenty teams - each comprising two students from 14 schools across Perth - will have the opportunity to put their science and engineering skills to the test by constructing small hydrogen-powered remote-controlled cars to compete in an endurance race.

Each school will be provided with Hydrogen Grand Prix kits and support from Horizon Educational and Australian Earth Science Education.

The WA finals will be held on 26 July 2024, and the winning team will head to the USA to compete in the World Finals in September 2024.

The H2GP aligns with the State STEM Skills Strategy by encouraging young people to study STEM, showcasing industry linkages and building STEM culture.

Comments attributed to Science Minister Stephen Dawson:

"Specialty STEM projects, such as the Horizon Hydrogen Grand Prix help inspire students to pursue further STEM education.

"Providing hands on experience with cutting edge technology helps students to learn the skills they need for the jobs of the future and industries important to the State to support new energy and decarbonisation.

"These projects not only foster more interest in science and technology, but also reinforce a commitment to sustainable development and cutting-edge education in STEM."
